AI, Procurement, and Strategic Fortification: Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir’s Vision for Israel’s Defense

At the conference, Zamir reflected on his tenure as the Director General of the Ministry of Defense, emphasizing the growth and strength of the ministry. "I feel that I am leaving behind a strong, leading, and powerful ministry focused on its primary mission," Zamir said, highlighting the ministry's vital role in providing crucial support for the IDF during times of war. He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz for their trust in his appointment as the 24th Chief of Staff, stating, "We will prove to our enemies that a powerful, determined, and victorious fist stands against them."

The Ministry of Defense’s year-in-review report for 2024 revealed the massive scale of its operations. The defense budget reached a record high, totaling approximately 220 billion NIS, with 150 billion NIS dedicated to “Blue and White” procurement. These efforts aim to boost Israel's production independence and reduce reliance on foreign defense sources. The report also highlighted the establishment of a new ammunition factory, the creation of four new production lines, and the expansion of four additional lines within Israel's defense industries.

Zamir’s leadership was pivotal in strengthening Israel’s procurement capabilities, including overseeing the largest defense budget in the country’s history. The ministry facilitated the acquisition of 40,000 air munitions during the war and coordinated a record-breaking airlift that transported more than 50,000 tons of critical equipment into Israel. Key to this procurement success was the Ministry’s commitment to supporting Israeli defense industries, providing substantial investments into developing and manufacturing cutting-edge military technology.

One of the standout achievements under Zamir’s guidance was the successful deployment of advanced armored vehicles. These vehicles, including the Barak tank and the upgraded Namer APC, were critical during the fighting and traveled over a million kilometers. The IDF also saw significant advancements in research and development, with a particular focus on AI and autonomous technologies, leading to the establishment of a new directorate for AI within the Ministry of Defense—a milestone 25 years in the making.

Zamir also highlighted the Ministry of Defense’s efforts in infrastructure, with an estimated 40 billion NIS in construction projects spanning borders and deep into enemy territory. This reflects a broader initiative to ensure that Israel's defense capabilities remain cutting-edge and well-equipped to meet evolving threats.

Amid the heightened conflict, the Ministry of Defense also focused on the well-being of those affected by the war, providing support to over 15,000 injured individuals and 5,942 bereaved families. The Ministry’s dedication to its veterans was further demonstrated through the establishment of new departments and mental resilience programs aimed at supporting soldiers, reservists, and their families.

As Zamir prepares to take on the role of Chief of Staff, his commitment to strengthening Israel's defense systems—through innovative procurement strategies, cutting-edge AI development, and enhanced support for military personnel—positions him to lead Israel’s military into a new era of security and resilience.
