Combat Veteran’s Life Saved by a Single Shot
How a split-second decision saved the life of a combat veteran on the Gaza border
In a dramatic incident that highlights both the complexities of border security and the ongoing mental health challenges faced by combat veterans, a potential tragedy was averted last week through one soldier's quick thinking and careful judgment.

Late one night along the Gaza Strip border, lookout soldiers reported a suspicious individual in a restricted buffer zone, seemingly attempting to infiltrate Israeli territory while shouting "Allahu Akbar." A force from the "Nitzach Yehuda" battalion was immediately dispatched to respond to what appeared to be a serious security threat.
The situation presented all the hallmarks of a potential terrorist infiltration, placing the responding forces in a position where lethal force would have been justified under standard rules of engagement. However, the patrol commander made a crucial decision that would ultimately save a life - choosing to aim for the suspect's leg rather than center mass, despite the possibility that the individual could have been wearing an explosive device.
This split-second decision proved pivotal when the injured suspect was transported to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon. There, medical staff made a startling discovery: the man was actually an IDF combat veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder who had attempted to end his life in this unusual and dangerous manner.
During the subsequent IDF investigation, the patrol commander revealed several factors that influenced his measured response. Key among these was the observation that the suspect had approached from the Israeli side rather than from Gaza, despite his threatening behavior and Arabic shouting. This detail, among others, caused the commander to question whether they were dealing with a genuine infiltration attempt.
Senior officials from the Southern Command praised the commander's judgment, noting the particularly challenging nature of the current environment. "We are in a very tense ceasefire period," one official explained. "The rules of engagement for the fighters at the front are different from what they are used to - and still, we require them to be sharp and alert at all times."
The incident has drawn attention to both the sophisticated decision-making required of border forces and the ongoing mental health challenges faced by combat veterans. The veteran is currently receiving treatment and remains under medical supervision, his life saved by what officials describe as a masterclass in measured response during high-stress situations.
"No one would have blamed him if he had shot the suspect in the center of his body," noted sources in the command, highlighting the exceptional nature of the patrol commander's decision-making. The incident serves as a powerful reminder of how split-second decisions can have life-altering consequences, and the importance of maintaining composure even in the most challenging circumstances.
