Survey Reveals Disconnect Between Mainstream America and University Radicals

Campus Antisemitism surges: Poll exposes growing disconnect on Israel among students

A new survey underscores a significant divide between mainstream American opinions and the more radical perspectives found on college campuses regarding the Gaza war and Israel’s right to defend itself.

While the cameras often focus on violent anti-Israel protests at universities, the polling data suggests that the majority of American adults have already formed strong opinions in favor of Israel.

The survey, conducted by the Israel on Campus Coalition, shows that 81% of American adults support Israel’s right to defend itself—a notable 11-point increase in just one month. Additionally, 82% of Americans believe that any ceasefire agreement should include the removal of Hamas from power, a significant rise from the previous 57%. These numbers highlight a growing consensus among the public that Israel’s security concerns should be prioritized in negotiations.

However, the situation on college campuses tells a different story. Among students surveyed, three-quarters reported experiencing, witnessing, or hearing about antisemitic incidents on their campuses. For Jewish students specifically, 30% have personally faced discrimination, while another 29% have witnessed such incidents. The rise of antisemitism on campus is a troubling trend, with many Jewish students feeling increasingly unsafe.

For college students, the Gaza war ranks as the second-most important issue, with 27% considering it a priority, just behind concerns about inflation and the economy. However, for Jewish students, the Gaza war is the most pressing issue, with 40% placing it at the top of their list. Alarmingly, nearly 90% of Jewish students expressed concerns that campus protests are fueling hate crimes against their community.

This alarming trend has led to government action. In his first week in office, President Trump signed an executive order targeting campus antisemitism, enabling federal agencies to hold perpetrators of antisemitic harassment accountable. As a result, the Department of Education has opened investigations at Columbia University and other institutions, while also cutting $15 million in federal grants for diversity programs at three universities.

The survey reveals a dangerous disconnect between the broader American public and radical campus movements, highlighting the increasing polarization of views on the Israel-Gaza conflict. The rising tide of campus antisemitism calls for more attention and action to ensure that Jewish students can safely express their beliefs without fear of discrimination or violence.
