A devastating accident in Tel Aviv on Sunday claimed the life of a 25-year-old woman riding an electric scooter, and the tragedy took an even more heart-breaking turn when her partner discovered her death only after reading about the crash online.

The fatal collision occurred on Namir Road, one of the city's main thoroughfares. According to reports, the young woman was struck by a truck while riding her electric scooter. Magen David Adom paramedics and medics arrived quickly at the scene but found the woman unconscious with a severe head injury. Despite their efforts, they were forced to pronounce her dead at the scene.

What made the already tragic event even more unbearable was the manner in which her partner discovered the news. After seeing an online report about a serious accident involving a scooter rider, he feared the worst and rushed to the scene only to be confronted with the horrifying confirmation that the victim was indeed his girlfriend.

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash, focusing on whether one of the vehicles involved ran a red light. Authorities are currently reviewing traffic light patterns and eyewitness accounts to determine whether the truck driver or the scooter rider may have violated the signal.

The driver of the truck has been taken into custody as part of the investigation.

This incident marks the fifth fatality in 2024 involving electric scooters, averaging one death per month. By comparison, four people were killed in similar accidents during the same period last year, with a total of nine scooter-related fatalities recorded throughout 2024.

Yaniv Yaakobi, director of the Or Yarok road safety organization, responded to the incident: “I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family. The use of electric scooters continues to rise every year, as does the number of casualties. We must build separate bike lanes to ensure safer travel. Simultaneously, we need to raise awareness about traffic laws and helmet use. The Ministry of Transport and the police must take more action to reduce road casualties through better infrastructure, increased awareness, and stricter enforcement.”
