Life sentence for terrorist who killed Amit Ben Yigal Hy"d

The Samaria Military Court sentenced Nad'mi Abu-Bakr on Thursday to life imprisonment for the intentional killing of Staff Sergeant Amit Ben Yigal Hy"d on 12 May 2020 during an IDF operation in the village of Ya'bad.

Abu-Bakr was convicted in May of this year on charges equivalent to murder under Israeli law in Judea and Samaria. The court also convicted him of obstructing justice and ordered him to pay over 4 million shekels in compensation. The verdict followed testimony from prosecution witnesses and the terrorist himself.

According to the court, on 12 May 2020, during an IDF operation in Ya'bad to arrest wanted suspects, Abu-Bakr threw a concrete block weighing nine to eleven kilograms from a rooftop at IDF soldiers with the intent to kill them. The block struck Staff Sergeant Amit Ben Yigal Hy"d and caused his death.

After the attack, the terrorist fled to his home and pretended to be asleep in order to mislead security forces searching for him. Once the forces left the area, he returned to the scene, collected pieces of the concrete block, and threw them to the side of the path in an attempt to obstruct the investigation.

The Military Prosecution stated: "The Military Prosecution will continue to act to bring to justice anyone who harms the security of the state and the security of the state's citizens serving in the IDF. The IDF shares in the heavy grief of the bereaved family and will continue to accompany them."
