Ort Ma'alot tragedy

Bressler blames govt for Golan tragedy

Anti-government activist ties death of yeshiva high school student in unexploded ordnance blast to lack of accountability and cronyism in public appointments

Shikma Bressler

Professor Shikma Bressler, a leading figure in the protests against the government, has responded to the tragedy in the Golan Heights in which a Maalot high school student was killed and some 23 others wounded after an unexploded munition detonated during a school trip.

In a post on her X account, Bressler drew a direct line between the incident and what she described as failures in governance. "Disaster follows disaster, failure follows failure. This. Is. Not. Fate," she wrote.

Bressler went on to criticise the absence of investigations and accountability in the public sector: "This is what happens when there are no inquiries, when no one is responsible for anything. This is what happens when positions are filled based on personal connections."

The statement came hours after the incident on the Ramim Ridge in the Upper Galilee, where students and teachers from the Ort Ma'alot yeshiva high school were hiking. According to a preliminary IDF investigation, one of the students placed an item of unexploded ordnance, believed to be a Hezbollah cluster bomblet left in the area, into his backpack. The device detonated near the road, killing Elazar Yair Wilensky and wounding 23 others.
