Opposition split deepens

Gantz: Bennett, Liberman plotting coup

Blue and White chairman tells Eisenkot that Bennett and Liberman are planning a move to sideline him and form a narrow government with the Arab parties

With exactly two weeks until election day, the rift inside the opposition bloc is widening.

Blue and White chairman Benny Gantz warned Yisrael Beiteinu chairman Gadi Eisenkot of a joint move by Yisrael Beiteinu's Avigdor Liberman and Bennett Party chairman Naftali Bennett, in which the two would demand the premiership even if they do not lead in mandates.

Gantz addressed the matter at the Yedioth Ahronoth conference, estimating that Bennett and Liberman would not settle for an electoral achievement if they cannot head the government. "Why would they pay the price of going with Arab parties if they're not prime minister? Of course they'll demand it," he said. "Read my lips, you'll see it happen."

Bennett categorically denied that any contacts or coordination are taking place between him and Liberman regarding the premiership. Liberman responded to Gantz's remarks with a jab: "One does not judge a man in his time of distress." Blue and White responded: "We actually do judge a man who is determined to reach the chair even at the price of selling out the state."

Gantz returned to the subject and wrote: "Yesterday I exposed Liberman's plot to oust Gadi Eisenkot and form a narrow government with Ahmad Tibi. A reminder: in 2020, Liberman was one of the main pushers for a government leaning on the Joint List.

"He was at Kfar Hamaccabiah, 'cooking,' preparing, pushing... That's exactly what he's doing today."

Gantz added: "After the October 7 massacre, Israel cannot afford another government leaning on the Arab or chareidi parties. We must stop the disaster, the security challenges are greater than any political experiment and do not justify dangerous minority governments. Israel must have a broad Zionist unity government. Vote unity. Save the state."
