Baby in ICU after parents skip vaccines

Unvaccinated infant diagnosed with bacterial meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae B, a disease preventable by routine childhood immunisation • Doctors at Shaare Zedek warn parents of life-threatening risks

A six-month-old infant is being treated in the paediatric intensive care unit at Shaare Zedek Medical Centre in Jerusalem after being diagnosed with bacterial meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae type B.

The child, who had not received routine childhood vaccinations, was brought to the paediatric emergency department with high fever and general malaise. Medical and nursing staff conducted a full workup and determined the infant was suffering from bacterial meningitis caused by the Haemophilus influenzae B bacterium, which is covered by the standard immunisation schedule.

The infant was transferred to the paediatric intensive care unit under the direction of Dr Jacques Brown. His condition is stable and he is fully conscious. Following treatment by medical and nursing teams, he stabilised and is expected to be moved to the general paediatrics ward under the direction of Prof. Orly Megged.

Dr Amir Zilka, a senior physician in the paediatric intensive care unit at Shaare Zedek, said:

"As soon as the infant was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, he began receiving antibiotic treatment and we initiated close monitoring of his condition.

Unfortunately, we encounter cases of potentially life-threatening illness that can be prevented through safe and effective vaccination. Haemophilus influenzae B causes meningitis, bloodstream infection (sepsis) and pneumonia. Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, vomiting and altered consciousness.

Beyond the immediate health dangers and even life-threatening risks, bacterial meningitis can have long-term effects on children's health and neurological function."
