Jewish rioters attack diplomats in Judea

Masked group assaults diplomatic delegation in Taybeh village; French mayor shoved, Belgian consular vehicle damaged; IDF calls incident "severe," opens investigation

Blocking a vehicle in Judea and Samaria

A highly unusual diplomatic incident unfolded over the past Shabbos in the Palestinian village of Taybeh, located in Area B of Judea and Samaria, when a group of masked Jewish rioters violently attacked representatives and diplomats from France, Belgium and Poland, alongside Israeli activists, who had come to the area as part of an olive harvest. According to the IDF's assessment, the incident is particularly severe and has sparked angry reactions in Europe and prompted an immediate investigation.

Footage circulated from the incident shows approximately seven masked rioters approaching the diplomats' vehicle in a threatening manner, armed with sticks and stones, and even pursuing them using an all-terrain vehicle. In one disturbing piece of footage, Bodo Brender, the mayor of Ollainville-Avrainville in France, is seen sitting on the ground, leaning against the vehicle and wearing his country's flag on his body in an attempt to identify himself.

According to the diplomatic delegation, the French mayor was violently shoved during the attack. In addition, direct damage and a broken window were documented on a vehicle belonging to the Belgian consulate. According to testimonies, the rioters also attacked Palestinian olive harvesters who are residents of the Christian village, considered the last remaining Christian village in Judea and Samaria.

Amit Orfali, one of the Israeli activists present at the scene, claimed there was a serious security failure: "We updated the army in real time, but they didn't arrive or respond. They threatened to kill us." The incident occurs in the shadow of the new policy of incoming Defense Minister Israel Katz, who decided upon entering office to cancel the use of administrative detention orders against Jews in Judea and Samaria.

The incident drew a sharp and immediate response in Europe. Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot, issued a scathing condemnation: "I strongly condemn the attack by masked settlers in Taybeh against Palestinians, our Consul General, French and Polish diplomats, as well as Catholic representatives."

Prévot added: "A French mayor was attacked and a Belgian vehicle was damaged. Our team is safe now, but Palestinians face this violence every day. Picking olives, reporting the news, or carrying out diplomatic duties should never put anyone at risk of attack." The mayor of Taybeh joined the condemnations and stated that "settlers attacked foreign delegations during a civilian visit as part of the harvest season."

The security establishment is not letting the incident pass. The IDF stated in response that the army "strongly condemns the severe incident of violence, during which diplomatic representatives were attacked by Israeli rioters." Police forces and forensic investigators from the Judea and Samaria District entered the area under IDF protection to collect findings and gather testimonies.

However, the IDF rejected the activists' claims of lack of response, and explained the chain of failures: "The consulate's tour was not coordinated in advance with the IDF — such coordination is important precisely to prevent incidents of this type. From a preliminary investigation, it appears there were no forces at the location at the time of the attack."

Regarding the report that went unanswered, the IDF clarified: "The report was sent to the brigade operations room account, which is designated for receiving reports from security personnel only and not from civilians. This center receives dozens of operational reports per day, and only provides responses to authorized parties. There are other centers whose purpose is to receive complaints from civilians."

Israel Police stated that the Binyamin station in the Judea and Samaria District opened an immediate investigation following the footage circulated online. "A report was forwarded to the Foreign Ministry in order to locate the victims, gather testimonies and expose the identity of the suspects," the police stated, emphasizing that it "will act to exhaust these investigations until bringing to justice anyone who took part in these incidents."
