Storm at Israeli news channel

Channel 12 fight: "Call Hamas terrorists!"

Reporter Adva Dadon confronted commentator Mohammad Majadele in the newsroom WhatsApp group after he accused colleagues of marginalising 20% of the country's citizens

A heated internal argument broke out in the Channel 12 news WhatsApp group after commentator Mohammad Majadele attacked the way Israeli media covers the Arab sector. The exchange, which drew in multiple newsroom staff, ended only when CEO Avi Weiss stepped in and wrote: "Thank you. We're done."

According to journalist Ran Boker, who published the exchange, Majadele opened with a long message asking that the voice of Israel's Arab citizens be heard. "Friends and colleagues, without preaching or handing out grades to anyone, I feel it necessary to give voice here to the 20% of Israel's citizens who are Arab, whom we often marginalise, whether intentionally or not," the commentator wrote.

Majadele went on to warn of "a very thin line between the need to protect the integrity of the elections, which matters to all of us, and being dragged into the campaigns and briefings of racist elements whose entire goal is to push the Arab public outside the boundaries of legitimacy in the state." He added: "Our job, in every report and every commentary, is to emphasise precisely the importance of every minority in a proper state exercising its right to go out and vote."

"Uncomfortable when you won't call Hamas a terror group"

The remarks drew immediate responses from newsroom colleagues. Journalists Ilan Lukatch and Ron Yaron agreed with Majadele, but reporter Adva Dadon responded sharply. "I agree, but at the same time I feel very uncomfortable when you don't call Hamas a terror organisation," Dadon wrote.

The tense exchange ended when CEO Avi Weiss intervened and wrote tersely: "Thank you. We're done."

Background: Majadele's turnout campaign

The argument comes against the backdrop of Majadele's activity in a voter-turnout campaign in the Arab sector. He had been on a speaking tour in Arab communities, during which he attacked National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and his policies toward security prisoners.

In the lectures, Majadele claimed that the minister's policies harm prisoners' conditions and accused him of responsibility for their suffering. He also said that as part of his work, he speaks daily with Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, from Judea and Samaria, and from the Arab world.
