Ex-minister: oust Netanyahu after unity call

Asaf Zamir, who days ago called for a unity government and acknowledged the right's victory, now reverses course: The last 24 hours make clear we must remove Netanyahu from power

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Asaf Zamir, deputy mayor of Tel Aviv, surprised observers days ago when he called for the formation of a unity government and acknowledged that the right-wing bloc had won the election.

Now he is walking it back. "I swear I wanted unity, and I even believed it was possible," Zamir said. "But the last 24 hours make clear we must remove Netanyahu from power and establish a national emergency government. Now."

Eight days after the election, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared for the first time in a recorded video released by Likud's spokesperson. The appearance comes against the backdrop of a dramatic development: the decision by United Torah Judaism not to recommend him to form the government, giving Gadi Eisenkot a majority of recommenders.

In the video, Netanyahu laid out his position on the composition of the next government, criticizing the possibility of a government dependent on Arab parties. "A government dependent on parties that support terror will not be able to confront the challenge of radical Islam that threatens us from within and without," the prime minister said.

Netanyahu went on to present his vision for the government's makeup: "Only a broad national government led by Likud and under my leadership, which will include all components of the national camp and all Zionist parties that wish to join, will be able to confront this challenge."
