Huckabee: Sanctions Possible for Kusra Riots

Ambassador Mike Huckabee said rioters from last week's incident in the West Bank village could face American sanctions if convicted of criminal offenses

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said Thursday that settlers who participated in last week's violent riots in the village of Kusra could face American sanctions if they are convicted of criminal offenses or violent activity in Judea and Samaria.

Speaking to Reuters, Huckabee invoked biblical commandments to condemn the violence. "The Bible says 'thou shalt not steal' and also 'thou shalt not covet' what belongs to others," the ambassador said. "If someone holds ownership of their land and their home, then for someone to come and take control of it by driving the family away is a violation not only of human law, but also of G-d's law."

Huckabee stated that "the United States was appalled by what happened in Kusra. The Palestinian families were victims of criminal, appalling and indefensible conduct, and the rioters who participated in the incident must bear the consequences."

At the same time, the American ambassador emphasized that the rioters represented "a small minority of the Israeli population in Judea and Samaria. They do not represent the full settlement community, which just wants to raise their families in Judea and Samaria, in peace and security."
