British-Nigerian boxing superstar Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, Nigeria, earlier today, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The former two-time heavyweight champion, who was a passenger in a black Lexus SUV, sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

According to statements from Nigeria's Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Ogun State Police, the crash occurred around midday near the Sagamu Interchange when the Lexus, reportedly traveling at excessive speed, lost control during an overtaking maneuver and collided with a stationary truck parked roadside. Preliminary reports also mention a possible tire burst as a contributing factor.

Five adult males were involved: Joshua was rescued with minor injuries, two others escaped unhurt, and two tragically died at the scene.

Eyewitness accounts and circulating footage show Joshua, appearing dazed and in visible pain, being assisted from the rear seat of the heavily damaged vehicle amid shattered glass. He was later seen walking slowly with help before being transported for care. Joshua, 36, of Nigerian heritage through his parents, was visiting his family in the Sagamu area, where he has strong ties (there is even a street named in his honor), following his recent knockout victory over Jake Paul on December 19 in Miami.

Promoter Eddie Hearn, speaking to media while on holiday, expressed relief: "We are trying to contact Anthony... thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images." Jake Paul, Joshua's recent opponent, posted on social media: "Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted."

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is notorious for high accident rates due to heavy traffic and road conditions. Authorities are investigating, with the FRSC emphasizing speed and improper overtaking as common causes of fatalities on Nigerian highways.

Joshua's team has not yet released an official statement, but early indications suggest he is stable and expected to recover fully. Condolences have poured in for the families of the deceased, with the incident serving as a stark reminder of road safety challenges in the region.
