A US Army unit at Fort Stewart in Georgia is utilizing an unconventional incentive to encourage soldiers to extend their active duty contracts. Members of the 9th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, are being offered four days of paid leave specifically timed for the release of Grand Theft Auto 6. In exchange for the time off, troops must commit to a service extension lasting between two and six years.
Historically, the US military has relied on standard incentive programs to meet retention goals, such as education funding, choice of duty station, or specialized training opportunities like airborne school. However, this localized initiative targets the gaming interests of younger service members. So far, 20 out of 130 eligible soldiers in the battalion have selected the gaming pass incentive.
Army leadership designed the incentive program to resonate directly with the daily interests of young personnel. "The idea was to create a unique incentive program that connects with things that interest soldiers," stated Lieutenant Colonel Angel Tomko, a unit spokesperson. "The command team, along with an Army career advisor, wanted to get soldiers excited about the possibility of extending their service."
The targeted offer applies to soldiers who sign a re-enlistment contract between August 1, 2026, and November 14. The official memorandum distributed within the unit specifies that the four day pass will align with the highly anticipated November 19 launch date of the video game. If successful, military leadership may consider expanding similar tailored programs to other units.
Reaching out to the gaming demographic reflects a broader strategy adopted by military recruiters after missing overall recruitment targets in 2018. Over the past several years, recruiters have attended major gaming conventions and established official esports teams competing in titles like Call of Duty, Fortnite, and League of Legends.
Grand Theft Auto 6 represents a major release for publisher Rockstar Games, following the launch of its predecessor in 2013. The upcoming installment is set in a fictionalized version of Miami and features the franchise's first female lead character. As retention efforts evolve across the armed forces, commanders continue to test untraditional benefits to maintain active duty force levels.
