Poetica Cafe in Brooklyn refused service to Representative Dan Goldman, sparking widespread outrage and forcing the establishment to delete its social media presence following a wave of threats

A popular Brooklyn coffee shop, Poetica Cafe, sparked outrage after expelling Jewish and pro-Israel Representative Dan Goldman, refunding his $9.82 purchase under the claim that the establishment does not serve supporters of genocide.

Following the incident, the cafe posted Goldman’s picture on social media with hostile captions, stating they do not serve racists or fascists and would have blocked his entry entirely had he been recognized earlier. Goldman responded gracefully, noting that the barista had kindly let his seven-year-old daughter use the restroom, prompting him to buy a coffee in return, and expressed hope that the worker would still receive her tip. In the wake of the public backlash, the management of Poetica Cafe received numerous threats and subsequently deleted their Instagram account.

Primary Tension Highlights Campaign Trail

The confrontation occurred right before the Democratic primary election for New York's 10th Congressional District, where Goldman is facing a fierce challenge from former City Comptroller Brad Lander. Lander has formed a close alliance with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to establish a progressive political axis on the Democratic left. While Goldman, a prominent figure who served as lead counsel in the first impeachment trial of Donald Trump, maintains that his support for Israel is deeply rooted in his Jewish identity and historical awareness, Lander frequently participates in anti-Israel protests and accuses the country of apartheid.

A Grim Warning for American Jewry

The incident has triggered alarms far beyond local politics, reflecting a volatile environment where public spaces are increasingly weaponized against Jewish individuals.

CNN's senior political analyst Scott Jennings, issued a grim warning following the event, emphasizing that the expulsion of a Jewish congressman from a public establishment marks a dangerous turning point for Jews across the entire United States, not just in New York.

Commenting on the severity of the situation, Jennings stated: "It's completely unacceptable for a Jew to be expelled from a cafe in Brooklyn. this is not Germany in 1939, this is the United States of America".

The analyst stressed that a perilous threshold is crossed when an elected Jewish official is thrown out of a business simply for supporting Israel, especially as political figures like Lander work alongside the openly anti-Israel Mayor Mamdani to vilify the Jewish state and promote accusations of genocide on the mainstream stage.
