Congressional Lockdown: Republicans Signal Resistance to Extending the War

As the 60-day window for unauthorized military action approaches its end on May 1st, President Trump faces growing pressure from both Democrats and members of his own party to seek Congressional approval.

The military campaign against Iran is entering a critical legal phase as the 60-day limit established by the War Powers Resolution of 1973 nears its expiration. Since the war began nearly two months ago, Democratic lawmakers have made five separate attempts to invoke the law to halt the operation or force a vote. While Republican majorities have previously blocked these efforts, the upcoming May 1st deadline is creating new fractures within the party. Several influential Republicans have signaled that they may not support a continuation of the war without a formal authorization from Congress. Brian Mast, the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, suggested that the balance of power and political support might shift significantly once the initial 60-day period concludes.

Under the law, once this period expires, the President has limited options. He can ask Congress for a formal authorization for the use of military force, a step that has not been successfully taken since 2002. Alternatively, he can claim a one-time 30-day extension, though legal experts note this is intended strictly for the safe withdrawal of troops rather than the continuation of offensive operations. A third option, which has been utilized by previous administrations, is to simply ignore the deadline and continue the campaign regardless of Congressional objections. While the White House maintains the legality of its actions thus far, the closing window presents a major political challenge that could determine whether the current military pressure on Iran can be sustained through the coming months.
