Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk canceled a scheduled appearance alongside US Vice President JD Vance at an event in Georgia after receiving what organizers described as “very serious threats.”

Andrew Kolvet, a spokesperson for the conservative student group, addressed the crowd at the University of Georgia in Athens, explaining that he had stepped in to replace Kirk. He said the decision was made due to security concerns following threats directed at her.

At the April 14 event, Vance headlined alone after Kirk withdrew on the advice of her security team just hours before the appearance. Videos circulating online showed large sections of empty seats in the venue, which has a capacity estimated between 5,500 and 8,500, prompting criticism from some commentators who questioned the explanation for her absence.

Vance, who proceeded with the event after consulting with the Secret Service, said he had been aware of the threats. During his remarks, he referenced the challenges Kirk has faced since the killing of her husband, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, last year, and criticized online attacks and conspiracy theories targeting her.

Kolvet also defended Kirk’s decision to withdraw, citing the seriousness of the threats and the need to prioritize her safety and that of her family.

During the event, Vance addressed a range of political issues, including calls for federal action in response to attacks on conservative journalists. He was also met with heckling over US policy toward Gaza. He urged young conservatives in attendance to remain politically engaged despite internal divisions.

Organizers did not provide further details about the nature of the threats or whether any investigation is underway.
