Strategic Flattery: Iran Defends Pope Leo XIV Following Trump's Brutal Criticism
Diplomatic irony: Iranian President Pezeshkian defends Pope Leo XIV after Donald Trump labels the Pontiff "terrible" on foreign policy. As the U.S. naval blockade begins, Tehran uses the spat to flatter the Vatican, while the Pope fires back at Trump’s "Truth Social" platform.

Amid skyrocketing tensions with Washington, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has waded into a war of words between U.S. President Donald Trump and the Vatican.
On Monday, Pezeshkian issued a formal condemnation of President Trump’s recent critiques of Pope Leo XIV, in what observers view as a calculated attempt to seize a diplomatic opening against the American administration.
The diplomatic spat began after President Trump labeled the Pope "terrible" regarding his foreign policy stances. In a post shared on social media, the Iranian President addressed the Pontiff with high honors.
"His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, I condemn the insult toward Your Excellency in the name of the great nation of Iran," Pezeshkian wrote. "I wish you glory from Allah."
Speaking to reporters on the same day, Pope Leo XIV made it clear that he was unfazed by the rhetoric coming from the White House, stating simply that he is "not afraid" of the Trump administration.
While the Pope noted he had no interest in being dragged into a prolonged public argument, he did offer a sarcastic jab at the U.S. President’s social media platform, Truth Social.
"It is ironic, the name of the site itself," the Pope remarked. "There is no need to say more."
The exchange comes at an incredibly volatile moment. As Pezeshkian reaches out to the Vatican, President Trump has simultaneously confirmed the commencement of a naval blockade on Iran, warning that "any Iranian ship that approaches will be destroyed."
By positioning Iran as a defender of the Papacy, Pezeshkian appears to be attempting to frame the U.S. administration as aggressive and disrespectful to global religious leadership, even as the two nations sit on the brink of military confrontation in the Strait of Hormuz.
