NAZI BUNKER CONTROVERSY

'A Moral Test': Rabbi Calls to Turn Former Nazi Bunker into Jewish Center

A fierce debate in Berlin over plans to demolish an underground bunker beneath the former Reich Chancellery for real estate development, caused Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt propose an alternative: transferring the site to the Jewish community center

Berlin officials plan to destroy the subterranean structure, spanning roughly 1,200 square meters, to make way for new housing and office space.

Local authorities argue there is no historic justification for keeping the site, while preservationists warn that demolishing one of the last remaining physical remnants of the Nazi regime risks erasing tangible history.

Transforming Evil to Good

Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, President of the Conference of European Rabbis, presented a third path, urging leaders to view the decision not as a real estate matter, but as a moral test.

He proposed handing the compound over to the Jewish community to establish active institutions for Torah study and Jewish life above the site where the destruction of European Jewry was once planned.

"In the very place where they tried to erase Jewish life from Europe, Jews should be allowed to build a future", Rabbi Goldschmidt stated, emphasizing that transforming the former Nazi bunker into a hub of Jewish learning as a profound historical answer to the past.
