Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez brushed off a question about whether she is considering a run for higher office in 2028, saying her political goal is not a specific title but a broader transformation of the country.

“My ambition is to change this country,” the New York Democrat said Friday during a political forum at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics.

The remark came after Democratic strategist David Axelrod asked Ocasio-Cortez directly whether she planned to run for president in 2028 or challenge Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, a fellow New Yorker.

“What’s funny is they assume my ambition is a title or a seat,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Presidents come and go. Senate, House seats, elected officials come and go.”

She then pointed to several of her core policy priorities, including single-payer healthcare, a living wage, workers’ rights and women’s rights. “Single-payer healthcare is forever,” she said.

Ocasio-Cortez’s comments come amid growing speculation about her political future and early maneuvering among Democrats ahead of the 2028 presidential race. The party is expected to intensify internal positioning after November’s midterm elections, which will shape the final two years of President Donald Trump’s second term.

An April Harvard CAPS/Harris poll showed former vice president Kamala Harris leading among Democratic voters with 24% support. California Gov. Gavin Newsom followed with 12%, while former transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg and Ocasio-Cortez each received 9%.

Ocasio-Cortez said she does not approach politics by working backward from a desired office. Instead, she said, she tries to decide what role she can play based on the political moment.

“I get to wake up every day and say, ‘How am I going to meet the moment?’” she said.

She added that conditions in the country change constantly, and that she makes decisions based on what she believes will move the country closer to her preferred policy goals.

Ocasio-Cortez has become one of the most prominent figures on the Democratic left since her first election to Congress in 2018. She has often clashed with party leadership while also building a national following among younger and progressive voters.

Her remarks also followed a podcast appearance with comedian Ilana Glazer, where she criticized economic inequality and argued that billion-dollar fortunes are not earned under the current US system.

“You can’t earn a billion dollars,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
