U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth sharply attacked the press corps during an official Pentagon briefing on the ongoing U.S. military operation against Iran, accusing reporters of actively rooting against President Trump’s success.

Hegseth told reporters directly:

“You, and I mean specifically YOU, the press, you cheer against Trump so hard… it’s in your DNA and in your blood to cheer against Trump because you want him not to be successful so bad.You have to cheer against the efficacy of these strikes. You have to hope maybe they weren’t effective.Whether it’s fake news CNN, MSNBC or The New York Times, there’s been fawning coverage of a preliminary assessment. I’ve had a chance to read it. Every outlet has breathlessly reported on a preliminary assessment ... You take half truths, spun information, leaked information… to cause doubt and manipulate the public mind.”

The comments came during an update on Operation Epic Fury. The briefing followed reports of U.S. casualties, including the March 12 crash of a KC-135 refueler aircraft that killed six service members, bringing the total American deaths in the conflict to 13 at that point.

Hegseth was responding to coverage of a leaked Defense Intelligence Agency preliminary assessment suggesting that damage to Iran’s nuclear sites may have been more limited than the administration initially claimed.
