A man believed to be in his 40s was shot and killed early Monday morning after forcing his way into a home in the Rhawnhurst section of Northeast Philadelphia and entering a teenage girl's bedroom, police said. The suspect was fatally shot by a neighbor who heard screams coming from the property and intervened.

Police responded to the 1600 block of Griffith Street at approximately 1:10–1:30 a.m. after reports of a burglary in progress. Investigators said the home's front door had been forced open and the suspect's vehicle was parked outside the residence.

Yeshiva World News described the family as Orthodox Jewish residents of a Jewish neighborhood. Local Philadelphia outlets, NBC10, 6abc, Fox29, did not report on the family's religious background.

According to local ABC affiliate 6abc, resident Evelyn Leiva said she was woken by a loud noise and found a man she did not recognize inside her daughter Valentina's bedroom, holding what she described as a metal tube. A struggle broke out. Valentina, 14, said she initially thought her mother's screams were part of a dream before waking to find her mother pushing the intruder out of the room.

"I heard her screaming but I thought I was dreaming, when I actually opened my eyes she was pushing him out of my room."

A neighbor who heard the commotion arrived at the scene, forced the front door open with a crowbar, and confronted the intruder. Police said the neighbor ordered the suspect to drop the stick or pipe he was holding, but the man refused. The neighbor then shot him once in the chest.

The suspect was transported to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:39 a.m. No injuries were reported among the family members or the neighbor who intervened. The suspect's identity has not been released.

Philadelphia Police's homicide investigation unit is handling the case. Authorities stressed that treating a fatal shooting as a homicide investigation is standard procedure regardless of circumstances, as detectives work to establish the full sequence of events.
