The recent gunfight outside the White House security perimeter, where Secret Service agents neutralized a mentally unstable gunman who fired up to 30 rounds, marks the latest chapter in a highly volatile security landscape.

While the attacker died of his wounds and a bystander was seriously injured, the White House confirmed that President Donald Trump was unharmed. This dramatic event has refocused global attention on the intense security threats surrounding the president, serving as a reminder of a broader, compounding timeline of modern political violence.

The Unprecedented Targeting of Donald Trump

The latest incident adds to a stark list of targeted plots and active assassination attempts directed at Donald Trump, spanning from his first term through his return to the executive office.

Political violence has cast a long shadow over the American executive branch since the 19th century, placing Donald Trump within a tragic lineage of targeted leaders. Four sitting U.S. presidents have been assassinated in office: Abraham Lincoln in 1865, James A. Garfield in 1881, William McKinley in 1901, and John F. Kennedy in 1963.

Several other commanders-in-chief narrowly survived high-profile attacks. Former President Theodore Roosevelt was shot in the chest while campaigning in 1912, and Ronald Reagan was severely wounded outside a Washington hotel in 1981. However, with the latest White House perimeter shooting appended to his security record, Donald Trump currently holds the historical record for surviving the highest number of recurring, direct assassination attempts of any American president in history.
