A sharp diplomatic confrontation is unfolding in the Atlantic Ocean after French President Emmanuel Macron chose to respond with mockery and force to the statements and territorial ambitions of U.S. President Donald Trump.
When he arrived at the Saint Pierre and Miquelon archipelago, Macron made it unequivocally clear that the territory is "French" and that there is no room for discussion on the matter. His visit came after the Trump administration marked the region on American maps and referred to it as territory under U.S. control.
This comes against the backdrop of the American president's attempts to treat the area as an exclusive sphere of influence. Despite the significant tensions this issue has sparked, Macron chose not to delve deeply into analyzing what he characterized as a possible "retreat" by the U.S. administration, but emphasized cynically that "anything that works in the direction of de-escalation is a good thing."
When questioned by reporters, Macron stated: "Saint Pierre and Miquelon are French, and I'm not supposed to respond to every piece of nonsense that's said."
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney joined the visit in a move designed to present a united front and stand up to the pressure the U.S. administration is exerting on countries in the region. Those present noted that "the joint visit constitutes a direct response to Washington's aggressive policy, which is causing direct harm to Canadian citizens and requires leaders in Europe and Canada to forge a close alliance to defend their sovereignty."
