Amid rising tensions

Putin meets Iran security chief after US letter

Russian president holds Kremlin talks with Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, a week after Rezaei received a letter from US Vice President JD Vance exploring a path to negotiations and an end to the war

The Kremlin confirmed Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Moscow with Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.

According to the Russian statement, the discussion focused on "recent developments in the region and the continuation of strategic cooperation between the two countries." Iranian media, meanwhile, reported that no new military commitments were announced during the meeting.

Rezaei's meeting with Putin comes a week after reports that US Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to the senior Iranian official aimed at exploring the possibility of resuming negotiations. American sources said the letter was sent on the instructions and with the full knowledge of President Donald Trump, and was intended to test whether understandings could be reached that would prevent another round of fighting between the United States and Iran.

Rezaei is considered a central figure in the hardline camp within the Iranian regime and one of the close associates of Mojtaba Khamenei. Despite the American overtures, Rezaei himself made clear two weeks ago that Iran is not prepared to conduct negotiations with the United States as long as its core demands are not met.
