President Donald Trump revealed that American representatives held a three-hour meeting with an Iranian delegation on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly gathering, just hours after declaring he must decide whether to "send Iran to hell."
Trump made the disclosure while standing alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, turning to his special envoy Steve Witkoff for comment. "I feel very good about the meeting," Witkoff responded. Trump added: "It was a very productive meeting. This could lead to something great for the nation, so I expect they'll want to reach a deal."
Earlier in the day, Trump told the UN General Assembly that "while others talked about peace, I made peace, and while others ignored threats, I confronted them." He singled out what he called "the number one state sponsor of terror, the Islamic Republic of Iran," as the clearest example of "a danger that was allowed to grow in power, threatening the world."
Trump reiterated his position that he will "never allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons," and claimed he faces "a big decision to make, whether to obliterate Iran." He qualified the statement, adding: "I believe we'll reach an agreement after the midterm elections."
