A 59-year-old man attacked shoppers at a mall in South Korea with knives strapped to both hands, injuring at least ten people in a stabbing spree that ended when bystanders tackled him with chairs.
The attack took place in Incheon, a city near the capital Seoul. The assailant moved between floors of the shopping center, stabbing people at random. One of the victims, a woman in her twenties, was rushed to hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery.
Witnesses said the attacker struck several people in the food court area and attempted to reach the floor where a cinema is located. Shoppers who noticed what was happening confronted him and used chairs to restrain him until police arrived.
"He just walked around and stabbed people. He didn't even say anything. He just stabbed whoever he saw," one witness recounted.
The suspect, who had previously been convicted of attempted murder and served a prison sentence, was under electronic monitoring following his release. South Korean authorities said they would examine the circumstances of the case and review how he was being supervised. Police are continuing to investigate his motives.
