Another tanker hit

Iran hits another ship in Hormuz Strait

Revolutionary Guards escalate attacks on commercial shipping in strategic waterway, with sources saying Tehran is timing the pressure to influence US energy markets and political climate ahead of November elections

Iran Strikes Another Vessel in Strait of Hormuz

New footage confirms another vessel struck in the Strait of Hormuz, as Iran's Revolutionary Guards escalate their campaign against commercial shipping in the strategic waterway. The Guards continue to menace the vital shipping route, threatening to hit vessels they claim are violating their directives.

The past several days have seen a sharp rise in maritime incidents in the area. On Wednesday, a container ship was reported sunk after being struck, with its 21 crew members rescued safely.

A second cargo vessel sank after being hit earlier. According to news agencies, the escalation represents a significant threat to maritime traffic in the region, with Iran attempting to expand its control over the passage and force vessels to operate according to its orders.

The Revolutionary Guards' naval arm has claimed in recent days that oil tankers were struck after ignoring warnings and attempting to pass through routes Tehran has designated as unauthorised. In one case, the Iranians claimed a supertanker hit a naval mine, exploded and caught fire. They later claimed another tanker was hit. At the same time, maritime security sources reported vessels struck by unidentified projectiles, while the circumstances of some incidents remain unclear.

According to a Reuters report published yesterday, sources involved in the matter assess that Iran is changing its methods of operation and increasing pressure on maritime traffic, in part in an attempt to influence energy markets and the political atmosphere in the United States ahead of the elections.

Tehran is seeking to present itself as controlling the vital maritime passage, while Washington applies economic and naval pressure on Iran. Against the backdrop of the escalation, it appears that Tehran is seeking to exploit the period before the midterm elections to apply pressure on Trump, on the assumption that the economic and political cost of another confrontation could narrow his room for maneuver.
