Citizenship on the line

Officials: US Building Case Against Omar

US officials say the administration is examining whether to strip the Minnesota congresswoman's citizenship, after federal agents searched her Washington home, seized her phone and subpoenas reached members of her family.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, one of Israel's sharpest critics in Congress, is the target of a Trump administration investigation. US officials told the Wall Street Journal that the aim of the investigation is to assemble a case for revoking her US citizenship and deporting her.

JNS has reported that the Somali-born Minnesota Democrat became a US citizen in 2000.

The citizenship effort follows a widening federal criminal investigation. Investigators are examining immigration documents that Omar and her late father submitted before she obtained citizenship, including whether false information was provided to secure it.

Reports differ on the number of subpoenas issued. NBC News reported that roughly a dozen subpoenas for information were issued, including to members of her family. The AP put the number of grand jury subpoenas at more than a dozen. The subpoenas went out days before the search and are tied to a federal grand jury in Minnesota, the state Omar represents in the House.

Omar herself did not receive a subpoena. No charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
