Netanyahu: I Warned Macron on October 7 That Hamas Would Reach "the Streets of Paris"

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he warned French President Emmanuel Macron on the day of the October 7 massacre that if Hamas were not stopped in Israel, its threat would reach France. He made the remarks as France struggles to contain a wave of violent riots.

Speaking in an interview with C14 English's Israel Debrief, Netanyahu said Macron called him on October 7, 2023.

"He said, 'You know, we have to work for an immediate ceasefire and to solve this by diplomacy,'" Netanyahu recounted. "And I said, 'No, no, Emmanuel. It's not going to be solved by diplomacy. These are monsters. These are neo-Nazis.'"

"I said, 'You know, Hamas is like ISIS. In fact, it's worse in some respects than ISIS, even worse than ISIS. And let me tell you, if we don't stop Hamas here, you'll see them on the streets of Paris,'" he said. "And that's exactly what is happening right now."

Netanyahu's comments come as France faces some of its worst unrest in years. More than 2,400 people have been arrested since Saturday amid disorder in several major cities. Authorities have imposed partial curfews in parts of Paris, including around Place de la République and Les Halles. The protests began over rising living costs and poor school conditions before turning violent. In a nationwide address, Macron said nothing justifies, explains or excuses the violence.

Relations between Netanyahu and Macron have been strained for much of the war. When France announced it would recognize a Palestinian state last year, Netanyahu accused Macron of rewarding terrorism. He wrote at the time that Macron "cannot provide security for Israel," adding: "Let's hope he succeeds in doing so on the streets of Paris."
