The speaker of Iran's parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, responded Wednesday to the results of the US midterm elections, in which Republicans suffered a sweeping defeat and lost their majority in both houses of Congress. In his remarks, he claimed that the war with Iran led to the Republican loss.
"Whether because of conscience or the cost of living, Americans said no to war, and we support that message," Ghalibaf said. "If the American administration betrays the public will to serve corporations and international extortionists, it will learn that our 'no' comes with a nightmare."
Separately, Hassan Ghashghavi, spokesman for the parliament's National Security Committee, said that "once again it has become clear that the umbrella of support Trump provides is always full of holes, even at the height of the storm. Anyone who clings to Trump's umbrella loses, from Hungary and Brazil to the candidates he backed in the US Congress."
