Swept to Sea: Two U.S. Soldiers Vanish During Sunset Hike in Morocco
A tragic accident during a sunset hike has left two U.S. soldiers missing off the coast of Morocco during a major joint military exercise.

New details have emerged regarding the tragic disappearance of two U.S. soldiers who vanished while participating in the "African Lion" joint military exercise in Morocco. According to reports, the two service members had gone on a hike to watch the sunset near the cliffs by the ocean when disaster struck. One of the soldiers reportedly fell into the water, and knowing his comrade could not swim, the second soldier jumped in to attempt a rescue just as a massive wave pulled them both under.
A third service member who was present also leaped into the ocean in a desperate attempt to save the other two, but he struggled against the powerful waves and was unable to reach them. Fortunately, the third soldier was able to make it back to the shore unharmed to raise the alarm. The soldiers were last seen near the cliffs of the Cap Draa Training Area, a region known for its rugged geography and dangerous coastal currents.
A massive international search and rescue operation was immediately launched, involving the United States, Morocco, and other allied nations. The search effort includes the use of drones, naval vessels, divers, and aircraft to scour the coastline. To aid in the mission, a Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft was deployed from Naval Air Station Sigonella in Italy and was expected to arrive in Morocco on Tuesday afternoon.
The Moroccan military has taken a lead role in the underwater search, sending specialized scuba divers to inspect the various sea caves that characterize the North African coast in that area. These caves are a prominent geographic feature and are being meticulously searched in hopes of finding the missing troops. African Lion is the largest joint exercise conducted by U.S. Africa Command, involving over 7,000 soldiers from 30 different countries training for land, air, and sea warfare.
As the search enters its second day, the families of the missing soldiers and the military community are waiting for updates with a sense of dread. The Cap Draa area is notoriously difficult to navigate, and the powerful Atlantic waves present a constant challenge for rescue teams. For now, the focus remains entirely on locating the vanished service members as advanced assets from across the Mediterranean are brought in to assist the local Moroccan forces.
