Tensions between Russia and the West dramatically escalated after the US Vice President indicated the United States is weighing the transfer of long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, a move Russian officials immediately warned risks a nuclear conflict.

The Vice President’s announcement that the US is considering supplying Tomahawks, which possess a 2,500 km range, means Ukraine could theoretically strike deep inside Russian territory, including the Kremlin and Moscow.

Medvedev: "Risk of Escalation to War with Weapons of Mass Destruction"

The statement follows a recent threat by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who warned senior Russian leaders to "start looking for shelters."

Former Russian President and top Putin ally, Dmitry Medvedev, responded to the missile consideration by reviving the country’s nuclear threat against Europe.

Medvedev stated that European powers "simply cannot afford a war with Russia," warning that such a conflict "carries a real risk of escalating into a war using weapons of mass destruction."

Kremlin Questions Who Controls the Launch

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov focused his comments on the critical technical details of any potential transfer, suggesting Moscow's reaction would depend on who controls the missiles' operation.

Peskov outlined two red lines concerning the advanced American weaponry:

Despite the dire warnings, Peskov dismissed the ultimate military impact, asserting that even the Tomahawks would not change the rules of the game or fundamentally alter Ukraine’s battlefield situation. The US, however, is being forced into a "very deep analysis" of the geopolitical implications before finalizing the transfer.
