Sanders Crossed the Rubicon
Bernie's "Bombshell": "Israel Is Committing Genocide in Gaza"
In a blistering op ed Bernie Sanders calls Israel's actions in Gaza genocide and urges the United States to halt security aid and push for an immediate ceasefire.

Senator Bernie Sanders, one of the most prominent Jewish politicians in the United States, has for the first time described Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide. In a sharply worded article published on Wednesday evening, he accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of carrying out ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza and Judea and Samaria under the cover of American support.
Sanders began his piece with a pointed reminder. “Let us be clear,” he wrote, “Hamas, a terrorist organization, started this war.” He referenced the October seventh attack in which terrorists killed twelve hundred people and abducted two hundred and fifty others. He affirmed that Israel, like any state, had the right to defend itself.
But from there his words turned into an indictment.
Citing findings by human rights organizations and a United Nations panel of experts, Sanders argued that Israeli actions now meet the legal definition of genocide. For him, the evidence is overwhelming.
The senator placed responsibility directly on Netanyahu and his ministers, pointing to statements in which members of the government openly spoke about destroying Gaza and repopulating it with Jews. He accused Israel of pushing “voluntary emigration” of Palestinians to neighboring countries, a term that he described as a euphemism for systematic destruction.
Sanders went further, claiming that the Israeli campaign is part of a vision backed by Donald Trump to transform the region into what he called “the Riviera of the Middle East,” a project that leaves no room for Palestinians.
For Sanders, the conclusion is unavoidable. “The intent is clear. The conclusion is inescapable, Israel is committing genocide in Gaza,” he wrote. He urged the United States to cut off military aid to Israel, impose an immediate ceasefire, open the gates to massive humanitarian assistance, and begin serious steps toward establishing a Palestinian state.
