Not a mine

CENTCOM: IRGC Projectile Sank GFS Pride

US Central Command said an IRGC projectile struck the container ship GFS Pride, which sank under tow, and rejected two other Iranian claims, including that hundreds of US troops were killed in Jordan.

The Strait of Hormuz

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said a projectile fired by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) struck the Singapore-flagged container ship M/V GFS Pride in the Strait of Hormuz. It was not a naval mine, as Iran had claimed. The vessel sank while it was being towed toward shore.

The GFS Pride was the first of three Iranian claims made over the previous 24 hours that the US military rejected.

The second concerned the waterway itself. CENTCOM said the United States and its regional partners control the Strait of Hormuz. More than 40 commercial ships passed through in the past 24 hours, despite the attack.

The third rebuttal concerned Jordan. The IRGC claimed it had killed hundreds of American service members there. CENTCOM dismissed the claim and said three US service members were killed in July while defending against Iranian attacks.

In October, CENTCOM announced that US forces had destroyed an Iranian-affiliated dhow in the Gulf of Oman that had been conducting surveillance and targeting US Navy ships. The operation took place on October 6, and the crew was removed before the vessel was destroyed. Iraq's Shafaq News, citing security data, reported at the time that at least 10 vessels had been attacked in or near the Strait within a matter of days.

In late September, CENTCOM also rejected a senior IRGC commander's assertion that Iran held full control of the Strait.
