Mines in the strait

IRGC: Container Ship Sank After Hormuz Mine Hit

Iran's Revolutionary Guards Navy said the ship had used an unauthorized route and warned local fishermen to be careful.

Vessel Struck by Unknown Projectile in Strait of Hormuz

A container ship loaded with more than 2,500 containers went down in waters south of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's Revolutionary Guards Navy announced. According to the Guards' statement, the vessel caught fire after it struck a naval mine.

On Wednesday, two senior Iranian officials told Reuters that Tehran is extending its campaign against commercial vessels beyond Hormuz, into the Gulf of Oman and farther afield. At least five incidents had been recorded around the strait in the preceding 48 hours, as reported earlier that day.

The Guards claimed the ship had attempted to sail along a route they called unauthorized and dangerous. They urged local vessels and fishermen in the area to exercise caution.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a British navy-affiliated agency, reported that a 50,000-tonne container vessel hit a naval mine while passing through the Strait of Hormuz. It reported no casualties.

The two accounts locate the incident differently. UKMTO placed the mine strike inside the strait, while the Guards said the ship sank south of it.
