Fort Peck Tribal Law Enforcement has issued a shelter-in-place order for residents of Wolf Point following reports of an active shooter situation behind the Town Pump convenience store on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, authorities confirmed late Sunday evening.
The alert was sent out at approximately 8:50 p.m. MDT, urging all residents and businesses in the small Roosevelt County community to stay indoors, lock doors and windows, and avoid the area around the store. Officials have identified local resident Ethan Murphy as the suspect, describing him as armed and potentially dangerous, though no physical description or motive has been released. The public is advised to call 911 immediately if Murphy is sighted, with options for anonymous tips.
As of early Monday, September 29, no shots fired have been confirmed, and there are no reports of injuries or fatalities. The incident appears confined to the immediate vicinity behind the Town Pump, with a heavy law enforcement presence on scene, including Fort Peck tribal officers and Roosevelt County Sheriff's deputies. Road closures are in effect in the area, and the situation remains active as authorities continue their search.

The investigation is being led by Fort Peck Tribal Law Enforcement in coordination with the FBI, per standard protocol for incidents on the reservation.
Wolf Point, with a population of around 1,000 and serving as the largest town on the 1.1-million-acre Fort Peck Reservation (home to the Assiniboine and Sioux tribes), has seen community concerns over gun violence in recent years, including a drive-by shooting in August 2025 that hospitalized one person and a triple homicide in Poplar earlier this month. Tribal leaders and residents have previously called for increased federal funding to bolster law enforcement resources amid persistent challenges.
Fort Peck Tribal Law Enforcement has not scheduled a press conference but encouraged residents to monitor their Facebook page for real-time updates. Local schools and businesses in Wolf Point are expected to remain on heightened alert into Monday morning.
