Shohei Ohtani Betrayed: Ex-Interpreter Sentenced to Nearly 5 Years for $17M Theft in Gambling Scandal
Ex-Interpreter’s $17M Theft and Gambling Scandal Rock MLB as Ohtani Prepares for New Season

Ippei Mizuhara, the former interpreter for baseball star Shohei Ohtani, has been sentenced to 57 months in prison for committing financial fraud, including the theft of approximately $17 million from Ohtani’s accounts. Mizuhara, who pleaded guilty to bank fraud and filing a false tax return, has also been ordered to repay $18 million in restitution. He is scheduled to begin serving his sentence on March 24.
Prosecutors revealed that Mizuhara misappropriated millions from Ohtani’s finances to cover his extensive gambling debts. Between September 2021 and January 2024, he placed over 19,000 bets through an illegal gambling operation. Despite accumulating total winnings of approximately $142 million, his losses exceeded $182 million, leaving him in debt for over $40 million.
During sentencing, Mizuhara expressed remorse and requested leniency from the court. While his defense team sought a reduced 18-month sentence, prosecutors insisted on the 57-month term, which was ultimately granted. His probation officer had recommended a four-year term.
Mizuhara placed his bets through bookmaker Mathew Bowyer, who operated an offshore betting site in Costa Rica. Bowyer, who is also facing legal repercussions, described Mizuhara as someone who struggled with a severe gambling addiction. In a statement, Bowyer admitted he allowed Mizuhara to continue betting despite recognizing his inability to stop.
Major League Baseball conducted its own investigation into the case and determined that Ohtani was a victim of fraud and had no involvement in illegal gambling. “Based on the findings of the federal investigation and MLB’s own review, Shohei Ohtani is considered a victim in this matter, and the case is now closed,” the league stated.
While Mizuhara prepares to serve his sentence, Ohtani is set to report to spring training as the Los Angeles Dodgers prepare for their regular-season opener on March 18 against the Cubs in Tokyo. Mizuhara, who was part of Ohtani’s team during the start of last season, was fired immediately after the scandal surfaced.
As investigations continue into illegal sports gambling rings, authorities are also monitoring other individuals connected to the case. Bowyer is set to be sentenced in April and hopes for probation instead of prison time.
This case highlights the serious consequences of financial fraud and illegal gambling, particularly in the world of professional sports. It serves as a cautionary tale for athletes and those entrusted with managing their financial affairs.
