Anti-Jewish fans stage (another) antisemitic protest as millions around the globe watch

Celtic fans defy UEFA again with anti-Israel protest in Munich as last-minute Bayern goal ends their Champions League hopes.

Just as they did in Glasgow, Celtic fans once again staged an anti-Israel protest during their Champions League match against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night as millions around the globe watch.

In blatant defiance of UEFA (Europe's Football Organization) regulations, which prohibit the display of flags unrelated to the teams involved, the Scottish supporters waved a massive Palestinian flag and unfurled banners reading, "Show the Zionists the red card."

Despite the clear violation, UEFA has yet to issue a response or take any disciplinary action.

The "Green Brigade", a well-known ultra group within Celtic’s fanbase, has repeatedly demonstrated its staunch Anti-Israel and Pro-Palestinian stance. The group had already faced criticism as just days after the October 7 Hamas terror attack on Israel, which left over 1,200 dead and 250 kidnapped, they raised the PLO flag.

For the match in Munich, Celtic fans brought flags and banners condemning Israel, though the display was somewhat less prominent than the one seen in Glasgow. Still, the message was clear—and once again ignored by UEFA.

While Celtic’s fans dominated the headlines off the field, their team came agonizingly close to securing a dramatic upset.

Nicolas Kühn gave Celtic the lead in the 63rd minute, leveling the aggregate score after their 2-1 loss in the first leg. Bayern Munich, struggling to find their rhythm, looked increasingly vulnerable as the game neared the end of regular time.

For a brief moment, it seemed like extra time was inevitable. But in a twist of fate, Alphonso Davies, playing his first game after a month-long absence, scored a last-gasp winner—his first goal of 2025—sending Bayern through to the Round of 16.

At the final whistle, Celtic players collapsed in disappointment, knowing how close they had come to an incredible turnaround.

“This is probably one of the most brutal moments I’ve ever experienced as a footballer," said Celtic captain Callum McGregor.

Will UEFA Finally Act?

As of now, UEFA has remained silent regarding the Celtic fans' repeated anti-Israel demonstrations. With growing scrutiny over political displays in football, many are questioning why the governing body has failed to enforce its own regulations against Celtic supporters.

While the Scottish club leaves the tournament in heartbreak, their controversial fans remain undefeated—at least in avoiding consequences.
