The internet has crossed a historic threshold: machines now generate more traffic than humans. According to data released by Cloudflare, a cloud infrastructure and cybersecurity platform, bot traffic surpassed human browsing activity in May 2026, approximately one year ahead of the company's original projections.
By April 2026, bots were already responsible for roughly 57% of HTML traffic passing through Cloudflare's network. If current trends continue, the company estimates that within five years, machine-generated traffic could exceed human activity by a factor of 1,000.
During Cloudflare's second-quarter investor call, Chief Financial Officer Thomas Seifert said humans would effectively become a "rounding error" in internet traffic statistics. He emphasized that this shift doesn't reflect declining human usage, but rather an extraordinary acceleration in non-human activity.
Elon Musk responded to the forecast on his X account, writing that the outcome is "not close at all", suggesting he views AI's dominance over human internet activity as virtually inevitable.
