Elon Musk announced Monday that he plans to give one share of his space company SpaceX to every child in the United States during 2027, in a distribution that could reach a total value of approximately $10.7 billion.
"Next year I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every child in America," Musk wrote on the social network X, adding: "This will be the first of many."
Approximately 73 million children under the age of 18 live in the United States, and a SpaceX share was valued at around $146 at the end of last week. By that calculation, the gift would be worth about $10.66 billion, roughly 1.17% of Musk's fortune, which Forbes currently estimates at $908.5 billion.
Musk has not yet clarified how the shares will be distributed, who exactly will be eligible to receive them, or when the distribution will take place. The indirect effect of the gift is that every child in the United States would become an investor in a company owned by Musk, something that could benefit him in the future.
The announcement came one day after the artificial intelligence company Anthropic said it would allocate 5% of its shares to a fund that would operate for the public benefit. Musk responded to that announcement and called for distributing shares directly to the public.
