A former engineer at artificial intelligence giant OpenAI is accused of planting a recording device in an executive meeting room at the company's San Francisco headquarters, after using his wife's ChatGPT account to research how to build and hide the equipment.
According to a federal indictment filed in the United States, the engineer, Abdulrahman Al-Fawzan, a Saudi national, fed the chatbot a series of queries in the days leading up to the incident about building a continuous recording device, real-time listening capabilities, and downloading and deleting recordings.
Prosecutors allege that on or around September 28, Al-Fawzan concealed the device behind a television in a meeting room used by the company's senior leadership, shortly after the chatbot provided assembly instructions through his wife's account.
Al-Fawzan's wife has not been charged with any involvement in the case.
