How to avoid AI scams this shopping season

Israel's National Cyber Directorate warns that hackers now use AI to create convincing fake shopping sites • New guidelines for safe online purchases: never share payment details in a chatbot, verify sites independently, and watch for too good to be true deals

Ahead of November's shopping season, Israel's National Cyber Directorate has published a set of guidelines for safe online purchases. According to the directorate, the relative ease with which scammers can now create pages impersonating well-known shopping sites has intensified over the past year due to artificial intelligence capabilities that allow hackers to give messages and websites a more convincing appearance.

The way people shop online has also changed, with more consumers turning to AI tools such as chatbots and automated agents to find products, compare prices, and complete purchases. The shift requires special attention to the risks involved in using these tools.

Verifying site credibility

The cyber directorate recommends checking the site before making any purchase: type the site address directly or enter through the official app rather than through a link received in a message. Verify who stands behind the site, business name, contact details, return policy, and customer service information.

The directorate also warns against deals that seem too good to be true: an expensive product at an unusually low price with a message that "the sale ends in two minutes" is a reason to stop and investigate.

Shopping through AI

On the use of artificial intelligence tools, the cyber directorate emphasizes: never share payment details in a chat. Do not type credit card numbers, identity card numbers or ID photos, passwords, or verification codes into a chatbot. Pay only directly through a secure payment service from a recognized provider.

Similarly, do not automatically purchase offers that came up from the chatbot or automated agent. AI tools can help find products, compare options, and choose between alternatives, but they do not necessarily know whether the store selling the item is trustworthy. Therefore, verify the site independently.

The directorate recommends limiting permissions: it is not advisable to authorize an AI tool that offers to connect to your shopping account, email, or payment method to perform automatic actions. Set every action to require approval.

In addition, check the actual price: AI may display an outdated price, a product that does not exist, or incorrect shipping terms. Verify the details on the seller's site before paying.

Paying online

It is preferable to use a limited credit card: setting a spending limit or using a card dedicated to online shopping may reduce exposure in case of a data breach.

Never give a verification code to anyone. A one-time code sent by the bank or credit card company is meant to authenticate a transaction. Do not pass it to a customer service representative, a seller, or anyone who contacts you.

Enable two-factor authentication on all shopping accounts and on your email account, and do not save credit card details on a site, especially on a store where you are making a one-time purchase. It is also recommended to activate alerts for charges so you can quickly identify transactions you did not make.

After the purchase

In November, when many Israelis are waiting for packages they ordered, scammers exploit the anticipation of deliveries, and attempts at fraud through fake messages about packages that have arrived or are delayed increase significantly. If you received such a message, check the tracking number and prefer to enter directly into the personal area on the shipping company or post office website rather than through the link sent in the message.

The recommendations come following a wave of cyberattacks recorded in Europe in recent days, in which attackers managed to remotely take control of temperature control systems in supermarkets and cause physical damage.
