New York Couple Returns from Vacation to Find Stranger Living in Their Apartment

A couple from Queens, New York, experienced a disturbing security breach when they returned from vacation to find an unknown woman occupying their apartment. Bill and Willem Kim were visiting Yellowstone on July 24 when their home security system alerted them to movement inside their luxury apartment at the Halo LIC building in Long Island City. Upon accessing their security camera feed, they witnessed a woman walking through their home, helping herself to a drink, and settling comfortably onto their couch.

"I couldn't believe what I was seeing. We were in complete panic," Bill recalled. When the intruder noticed the security camera, she removed it from the shelf and disconnected it, cutting off the couple's ability to monitor what was happening in their home.

Friends of the couple arrived at the apartment before police could respond. The woman left the premises, but minutes later returned and used a key to re-enter the apartment. Police eventually arrived and she was removed from the property by ambulance.

Building management later explained that the woman had claimed to be the couple's dog sitter, and that a front desk employee had mistakenly given her a key to their apartment. The employee was fired, and building management announced they would tighten security protocols. However, two days after the initial incident, the woman returned to the building and attempted to gain entry again, this time wearing a hospital bracelet on her wrist.

The woman has not been publicly identified and no charges have been filed against her. Police are investigating the incident as a burglary. While nothing was stolen from the apartment, the couple said the experience has left them shaken. "We no longer feel safe here," Bill said, adding that they are now searching for a different apartment.
