Police in Tacoma, Washington, rescued 60 cats and kittens from an abandoned 40-foot sailboat moored off Owen Beach, in an operation that stretched across six days.
The rescue began on August 6 after officers discovered more than 30 cats living aboard the vessel in poor conditions. Many of the animals were frightened and malnourished, authorities said.
What started as an effort to remove several dozen cats grew as the operation continued. By the time police announced the mission's completion, the total had reached 60 animals. "The last cat is off the boat. Really this time!" the department posted on social media with a touch of humor.
Authorities cautioned that cats are known for their ability to hide in small spaces, and said they would continue searching the vessel to ensure no animals were left behind. More than 40 of the rescued cats were transferred to the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County, while the remainder were placed with foster families.
Police also asked the public not to board the sailboat independently, after a private cat rescuer climbed aboard during the night and captured two cats. Officers said the unauthorized boarding complicated their investigation into the boat's owner, emphasizing that the case remains an active criminal inquiry.
