Florida Tour Guide Alligator Incident: Wildlife Safety Concerns

A tour guide in Florida has drawn widespread criticism after video footage captured him approaching a wild alligator during a boat tour in the Everglades, touching the animal's snout and causing it to open its jaws in front of a group of tourists.

The approximately one-minute video was recorded by Scottish tourist Eve Wishart. In the footage, the guide can be heard telling the alligator, "Come on, smile," as he moves closer to the reptile and makes physical contact with it.

Wishart said she was "shocked and upset" by the interaction, adding that she had never witnessed anyone engage with a wild alligator in such a manner.

The unusual encounter violates Florida wildlife authorities' guidelines, which prohibit feeding wild alligators and warn against creating contact between the animals and humans. According to state officials, habituating alligators to human presence can cause them to approach people and create dangerous situations. The guide's identity has not been publicly released, and no enforcement actions against him have been reported to date.
