A routine house clearance in Scunthorpe, England, yielded an unexpected find: a Mars chocolate bar dating back to the early 1990s, preserved among items left untouched for decades.
Victoria Gordon, who works in property clearance and cleaning, discovered the vintage candy bar. She immediately recognized it wasn't an ordinary find, the packaging looked distinctly old, but what really caught her attention was its size.
Examination of the wrapper revealed the bar originally weighed 62.5 grams. When placed alongside a current Mars bar sold today, which weighs approximately 40 grams, the difference was striking.
Photos comparing the two bars side-by-side quickly spread across social media, generating widespread reaction. Many online commenters pointed to the discovery as a near-perfect illustration of "shrinkflation", the practice where companies gradually reduce product quantities in packaging, often without corresponding price reductions.
In this instance, the 1991 bar was more than 50% heavier than the modern version displayed next to it. However, the comparison doesn't necessarily prove a continuous downsizing trend, as food manufacturers adjust product sizes, packaging types, and variety offerings over the years for various reasons.
Mars company representatives explained that their bar sizes have changed multiple times over the decades, with such decisions influenced by numerous factors including consumer preferences, raw material costs, and market conditions.
Gordon said she initially didn't attach special significance to the chocolate bar and considered discarding it. Only after noticing the date and weight did she decide to photograph it and compare it with the current version.
