Unexpected Passenger

Snake Crawls from Car Hood While Driving

Tennessee family's routine trip turned startling when a five-foot snake appeared from under the hood while the vehicle was in motion

Snake Emerges from Car Hood During Highway Drive in Tennessee

What began as an ordinary drive, became something terrifying for a Tennessee family. A snake measuring approximately five feet in length suddenly emerged from beneath their vehicle's hood and began crawling across the front of the car while they were traveling.

Annalisa Hensley, who captured the unusual incident on video, recounted the experience. The family had been heading to Mount Juliet to purchase soccer equipment for their youngest daughter when her husband suddenly spotted the reptile. "We're just having a conversation, and then my husband says: 'There's a snake,'" she recalled. "I'm sitting there saying, 'We have a giant snake on our hood.'"

The family attempted to pull over to remove the unwanted hitchhiker from their vehicle, but before they could come to a complete stop, the snake leapt off the car and disappeared.

Mallory Tate, a biologist with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, identified the reptile as likely being a gray rat snake, a common non-venomous species found throughout the region. Similar incidents have been documented previously across the United States, with snakes hiding in vehicles and making surprise appearances on hoods or windshields while cars are in motion.
