Passengers on the London Underground witnessed an unusual royal encounter when Kate Middleton and her daughter, 11-year-old Princess Charlotte, were spotted travelling together on the Elizabeth Line, one of the capital's main transport routes. The rare footage, shared on social media, shows the pair seated beside ordinary commuters, chatting casually while their security detail attempted to maintain a discreet presence.
The journey quickly became a surprise encounter for those who found themselves in the same carriage. According to The Sun, this may have been Charlotte's first experience riding the Underground.
One passenger who was present struggled to hide his astonishment, describing the meeting as surreal. The sight of the Princess of Wales and her daughter during a routine journey was completely unexpected, he said.
"I was sitting on the train and turned my head and suddenly I saw her," he recounted with excitement.
Hello! magazine also reported that Charlotte appeared surprised by the unfamiliar surroundings. A source who spoke to the magazine said the two were accompanied by security personnel, but they maintained as quiet a presence as possible to allow them to enjoy the journey without causing a commotion.
According to passengers, Kate and Charlotte exchanged a few words with people seated across from them and appeared relaxed and content. One passenger said Kate looked at her mobile phone for several minutes while the two chatted and smiled with each other.
The pair later disembarked at Tottenham Court Road station. Kate, 44, was seen holding her 11-year-old daughter's hand, though it was not disclosed where they continued after leaving the station.
Not Kate's first time on the Underground
While the joint journey with Charlotte sparked surprise, for Kate herself this is not a new experience. In 2023 she travelled with her husband, Prince William, on the same line, and they too alighted at Tottenham Court Road.
Before marrying Prince William and joining the Royal Family, Kate regularly used public transport. In a 2013 interview with ABC, she even said she missed riding the Underground.
This time, alongside the journey itself, it was Charlotte's presence that made the event particularly unusual: a young princess, beside her mother, inside a carriage packed with ordinary passengers — a sight that is not part of the Royal Family's daily routine.
