Few gave Cape Verde a chance.

Drawn into a World Cup group with European giants Spain and South American powerhouse Uruguay, the tiny island nation of just over half a million people was expected to make up the numbers. Instead, it is making history.

After capturing global attention with a heroic draw against Spain that transformed their 40-year-old goalkeeper into a social media star, Cape Verde delivered another unforgettable World Cup moment on Saturday, earning a dramatic 2-2 draw against Uruguay and moving one step closer to football history.

For a country better known for its music, beaches, and diaspora than its football pedigree, the result felt like a victory. Facing a nation that has won two World Cups and produced legends from José Nasazzi to Luis Suárez, Cape Verde refused to be intimidated. They fought, pressed, and believed.

Adding an Israeli connection to the story was Cape Verde's goalscorer, Hélio Varela, who currently plays for Maccabi Tel Aviv.

His goal sparked celebrations not only in Praia, but among many Israeli football fans who have followed his rise in the Israeli league.

With two draws against Spain and Uruguay, Cape Verde has shown that courage, organization, and belief can sometimes overcome history itself.

The islands may be small.

But tonight, Cape Verde stands tall.
